Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Qin Gang’s Remarks on the EU Statement on the Case of Wo Weihan
2008/12/01

Q: The European Union and Austria made statements the other day to express strong discontent over the execution of Wo Weihan, saying that the execution seriously undermines the spirit of trust and mutual respect required for the EU-China dialogue on human rights. The US also voiced its concern over the case. How do you comment?

A: China is a country under the rule of law. Wo is a Chinese citizen convicted with established evidence by Chinese judicial authorities according to law. In other words, the case totally falls within China’s judicial sovereignty. Moreover, the trail is fair whereby the defendant’s litigation rights are fully guaranteed.

By pointing the finger at Chinese judicial authorities’ law-based verdict, the EU grossly interferes in China’s judicial administration, tramples on rule of law, and thus undermines the basis for sound development of China-EU dialogue on human rights. We express strong discontent and resolute opposition. China urges the EU to immediately correct its mistakes and stop interfering in other countries’ judicial administration.
